Undergraduate Research

The first iteration of our assay to identify and characterize mycobacteriophages was presented in 2012 at the 4th Annual SEA-PHAGES Symposium at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and at the National Conference of Undergraduate Research at Weber State University, Ogden, UT.

In January of 2013 we participated in the First SEA-PHAGES Grand Challenge which consisted of identifying 15 unknown mycobacteriophages. My group used our assay to determine the cluster of each unknown and we verified our results via transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Below are the electron micrographs (images courtesy of Brian Ford).

During the summer of 2013 we presented an improved version of our detection and characterization assay at the Evolution 2013 conference in Snowbird UT.
